How Caller ID Works with On-VoIP

On-VoIP uses a two-layer caller ID system. Internal caller ID is managed on your extensions within the On-VoIP portal — this is the name and number displayed when extensions call each other inside your phone system. Outbound caller ID (CNAM) — the name and number that appears on the recipient's phone when you make external calls — is registered and managed through Telnyx, our upstream carrier.

This separation gives you clean internal identification for your team while ensuring outbound calls are properly authenticated at the carrier level.

Internal Caller ID on Extensions

Each extension in your On-VoIP system can be assigned a name and number that displays when it calls other extensions. This makes it easy for your team to identify internal calls:

  • Extension name: Set a descriptive name like "Front Desk" or "John Smith" for each extension
  • Extension number: The internal dial number (e.g., 101, 102) shown on internal calls
  • Phone number override: Optionally display one of your account phone numbers instead of the extension number for internal calls

Internal caller ID settings are configured in the On-VoIP customer portal under your PBX extension settings.

Outbound Caller ID Through Telnyx

When you make calls to external numbers, the caller ID and CNAM (Calling Name) displayed to the recipient is registered through Telnyx. This means:

  • CNAM registration: Your business name is registered at the carrier level through Telnyx so recipients see your name, not just a number
  • STIR/SHAKEN authentication: Telnyx signs all outbound calls with STIR/SHAKEN attestation, verifying your caller ID is legitimate
  • Carrier-level reliability: Because CNAM is registered directly with the carrier, it propagates properly across all major networks

On-VoIP handles the Telnyx CNAM registration for you as part of your service — just let us know your desired business name when you sign up or contact support to update it.

Why STIR/SHAKEN Matters

STIR/SHAKEN is an FCC-mandated framework that verifies the caller ID on VoIP calls to combat robocalling and spoofing. Because On-VoIP routes calls through Telnyx, all outbound calls are automatically STIR/SHAKEN authenticated:

  • Your calls are verified: Receiving carriers can confirm your caller ID is legitimate
  • Lower spam risk: Authenticated calls are far less likely to be flagged as "Spam Likely" or "Scam Likely"
  • Higher answer rates: Verified calls display normally instead of being screened out

There's nothing extra to configure — STIR/SHAKEN compliance is built into every call through Telnyx.

Caller ID for Inbound Calls

On-VoIP also provides caller ID for inbound calls, showing you the caller's number and name (when available) before you answer. This works with desk phones, softphones, and mobile apps.

Combined with call recording, inbound caller ID helps your team prepare for each call before picking up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about caller id & cnam.

How do I set my outbound caller ID name (CNAM)?
Outbound CNAM is registered through Telnyx, our upstream carrier. On-VoIP handles this for you — contact support with your desired business name and we'll submit the CNAM registration. Changes typically propagate within 24–48 hours.
What is the caller ID setting on my extension for?
The caller ID setting on your extension controls what other extensions within your On-VoIP system see when you make an internal call. It does not affect what external callers see.
Can I use any phone number as my outbound caller ID?
Your outbound caller ID must be a number that belongs to your On-VoIP account. This is required for STIR/SHAKEN compliance and to prevent spoofing.
Why are my calls showing as "Spam Likely"?
This can happen with brand-new numbers before CNAM has fully propagated. On-VoIP authenticates all calls through Telnyx with STIR/SHAKEN, but some receiving carriers apply their own algorithms. Registering with free services like Free Caller Registry can help.
Can I block my caller ID?
Yes. You can block your outgoing caller ID on a per-call basis by dialing *67 before the number.
